Using MCNY Materials On Your Mobile Device: eBook Central: The MCNY eBook Collections

A guide to accessing MCNY e-books and e-journal articles through smartphones and tablet computers.

Using eBook Central and BlueFireReader: For iOS

As of February 2017, eBrary has turned into eBook Central. But you'll still get the same great content.

Here's a set of easy steps to get started with MCNY and eBook Central on your iPhone or iPad. If any of these steps seem confusing, remember that the MCNY librarians are also here to help, and can walk you through the process in person.

You will need 3 things to read MCNY library eBooks on your iOS device:

  • The eBook Central-recommended BlueFire Reader App (free!)
  • Your MCNY Moodle/Self-Service username and password (which will transform into your eBook Central account!)
  • A personal Adobe Digital Editions account (free!)

Step One: Downloading The App

The Bluefire Reader app for iPhones/iPads can be downloaded at this link:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/bluefire-reader/id394275498?mt=8

Or, you can search the name "Bluefire Reader" within your App Store.

Downloading the app will require entering your AppleID password, so make sure you have that handy. However, this app is completely free. Once the download and installation has finished, then you can get started!

Step Two: Finding The Book You Want To Read

As an MCNY student, staff member, or faculty member, you have access to thousands of eBook Central titles through the MCNY Library. There are two different ways to find MCNY eBooks.

Like other library resources (print books, journal articles, etc) , eBooks can be found using the search box on the MCNY Library web page. This can be searched from any web browser, including Safari for iPhone.

eBooks will be clearly labeled, and can be accessed by clicking on Access Online:

When you click on the URL, you will be prompted to login with your Moodle/MCNY password, to verify you are an MCNY affiliate:

Once you enter this information, and click log-in, you will be taken to the eBrary book you chose.

Alternately, you can also search for books directly from the MCNY Library's eBook website: https://ezproxy.mcny.edu/login?url=http://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/mcny-ebooks

When you go directly to the eBook Central website, as in the first process, you will be prompted for your Moodle/MCNY password. This tells eBrary that you're allowed to have access to thousands of eBooks!

Step Three: Download The eBook You Want

Whether you find books through the MCNY search, or through our eBook Central website, you will eventually come to a page like this:

When you press the "Full Download" button, it will ask you the following questions:

It will then ask you to Download  and InstallBluefire Reader if you have not already.

Click 'Done with this step>'; Once you've done that, you're on your way to having MCNY eBooks on your phone!

Step Four: Setting Up An "Adobe Digital Editions" Account

After it's checked that you have Bluefire Reader, the system will  then  ket you choose how long you want to download the book, and what format to use:

This will download the book to your device, and take you to the Bluefire App:

The first time you use BlueFire for iPhone, you will need to sign up for a free Adobe account, if you don't have one already. Adobe Digital Editions is the software which allows different kinds of computers to read the same eBook. Choosing Create A Free Adobe ID will bring you to this page:

Once you are signed in to Bluefire with your new ID, you should not need to do so again.

Step Five: Reading Your eBook!

Once you have signed in to Digital Editions, and your download is finished, you can look in your downloads folder, and there's the book you wanted to read!

Tap on the book to start, and then swipe/tap to read the book like you would any e-document on your phone:

You've done it! Note that once you've finished reading your MCNY eBook, you can return it at any point before your time is up, within the "Info" menu. And if you don't, it'll just expire, no muss, no fuss.

Now, you're set up to do this with any of the hundreds of eBook Central titles available through MCNY Library. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to call, chat, or email with us.
