Library Handbook: Library User Code of Conduct

Guide to the circulation, account, and library use policies of the MCNY Library.

Facilities Policies

  • Cell Phones
    •  Please silence your cell phone when you enter the library.
    • Cell phone conversations are not permitted.
    • Texting and emailing are permitted, as long as they are done quietly.
  • Food and Drink
    • Please help us to keep the Library & Learning Commons space clean and comfortable for everyone by following the policy outlined below, and by cleaning up after yourself.
      • No food of any kind is permitted in any location.
      • Beverages are permitted in bottles with tight screw-tops or covered containers.
      • Staff  will have final approval over any sort of beverage container allowed in the Library and reserve the right to exclude any container for any reason.
      • No beverages of any kind are permitted in the computer lab.
      • Bottled water is allowed in the lounge-chair area; other beverages are not.  
  • Smoking
    •  Smoking of any kind is not permitted in the Library.
  • Personal Property
    • Please do not leave any items in the Library unattended. While library and college staff  will work to maximize security, the library is not responsible for the loss or theft of personal property.
    • If found, lost items or items found attached to Library property (such as computers) will be brought to the 12th Floor Security desk at the end of the day.
  • Noise Level
    •   The library is intended primarily as a place for quiet work or study.
    •    Please keep your conversations at a reasonable volume.
    •   Music should only be listened to using headphones.
  • Behavior
    •  We are all adults and professionals.
    •   Please be respectful of your fellow students.
    •  Please be respectful of the Library staff.
    • Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.
  • Violation of any of these rules can and may result in removal from the Library by MCNY Library Staff and Security; repeated violations may result in revocation of Library privileges.

Computer and Internet Use Policies

  • Authorized Users
    • Library computers and printers may be used by a) MCNY students, faculty and staff; b) MCNY alumni with valid ID; c) students of Language Studies International (LSI) with valid ID; d) students of the College of New Rochelle (CNR) with valid ID.
  • Restrictions on Use
    • Use of library computers is intended for academic purposes only.
    • Only current MCNY students, faculty and staff with active online IDs can log-in to library databases; MCNY alumni, LSI students, and CNR students are not included in institutional subscription agreements.
  • Inappropriate and Sexually Explicit Material
    • Viewing or printing of inappropriate and/or sexually explicit material creates a hostile library environment and is not permitted.
  • Unattended Computers
    • Computers are available on a first-come, first-serve basis; any computer left attended for more than 15 minutes may be reassigned.
  • Laptop Computers, Tablets, and Smartphones
    • These devices may be plugged in to available MCNY Library outlets, provided it does not block necessary aisle space or create a fire hazard.
  • Printing
    • Printing is provided on an unlimited basis; however, please be respectful of the MCNY community and print responsibly.
  • Violation of any of these rules can and may result in removal from the Library by MCNY Library Staff and Security; repeated violations may result in revocation of Library privileges.
