Using MCNY Materials On Your Mobile Device: EBSCOHost: eJournal articles

A guide to accessing MCNY e-books and e-journal articles through smartphones and tablet computers.

EBSCOHost for iPhone

As an MCNY student, staff member, or faculty member, you have access to thousands of eJournal articles through the MCNY Library. EBSCOHost is one of the largest groups of eJournals, where you can search for as few or as many subjects as you like.  Using EBSCOHost on your iPhone is a little bit different then the eBrary app, because you're working with journal articles, and not books. Again, if any of these steps seem confusing, remember that the MCNY librarians are also here to help, and can walk you through the process in person.

You will need 3 things to search for an access MCNY library eJournal articles on your iOS device:

  • The EBSCOHost App  (free).
  • Your MCNY Moodle/Self-Service username and password
  • A EBSCOHost-MCNY 'authorization key' (more on that later)

Step One: Downloading The App

The EBSCOHost app for iPhones/iPads can be downloaded at this link:

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ebscohost/id433269587?mt=8

Or, you can search the name "EBSCOHost" within your App Store.

Downloading the app will require entering your AppleID password, so make sure you have that handy. However, this app is completely free. Once the download and installation has finished, then you can get started!

Step Two: Logging In To EBSCOHost Through Your Browser

Before accessing EBSCOHost through your new app, you'll need some information from EBSCOHost first.  You can always access EBSCOHost by going to the MCNY Databases guide, and this is just as easy to do through your mobile web browser. Clicking on "A-Z" will give you the usual list:

When you click on the URL, you will be proimpted to login with your Moodle/MCNY password. This will take you to the EBSCOHost site.

Step Three: Getting An Authentication Key

Before accessing eJournal Articles from the App, EBSCO will need to know that you are who you say you are, and that you are actually an MCNY student. It does this by requesting a series of number called an "authentication key". Fortunately, EBSCO has made it very easy to get that key.

First, scroll to the bottom of the EBSCOHost page, until you see a link labeled "EBSCOHost for iPhone and iPad":

Clicking on that link will bring up this window, where you will be prompted to enter your email:

Enter your email, and then check the email program you use on your iPhone.

Step Four: Using Your Authentication Key To Log In To The EBSCOHost App

You should have received an email from EBSCOHost that looks like this:

While reading this email on your iOS device, tap the link as instructed. It will automatically open the EBSCOHost App, and authenticate you as an MCNY student. If anything ever goes wrong, you can repeat the process, and reauthenticate your device.

Step Five: Using The EBSCOHost App

Following the authentication key link should bring you to this screen:

As you see, the steps you've taken have logged you in to EBSCOHost as a student, just as you would on a desktop computer. You can search all of EBSCOHost with the Search box at the top of the screen. Or, if you click on the Settings icon at the bottom of the screen, it will take you to a list of all the EBSCO eJournal databases that MCNY subscribes to:

You can select as many as you like, just as you might search on a larger computer. Remember, if you need any search or reference help, the MCNY librarians are always here to assist you.
