Cultural Diversity in Children's Literature: Home

Introduction

Choosing culturally diverse books for your classroom library is not as difficult as it may seem.  How do we select books that reflect culturally diversity?  The books you select should:

- have a central character of color;
- present the character's culture accurately and sensitively;
- empower children of color.

There are several places that you can search to familiarize yourself with the multitude of books that are available. The MCNY Library includes a resource room that contains children's books for Education majors. Visit your local public library and speak with the children’s librarian, explore the shelves of independent bookstores, view publisher’s webpages.
